Relics of St. Thomas the Apostle, Ortona

The relics of St. Thomas the Apostle are kept in Ortona in the crypt of the basilica of San Tommaso Apostolo. They were stolen from Chios in the Aegean, by the ship owner Leone Acciaiuoli and brought to Ortona on September 6, 1258 with the Armenian-Mesopotamian tombstone of the saint.

Desecrated by the Turks in 1566, the relics are kept in an urn of gilt copper made in 1612 by Tommaso Alessandrini from Ortona.
