Nature Reserve Monte Genzana and Alto Gizio

The Nature Reserve Monte Genzana and Alto Gizio, established in 1996, is the largest reserve of Abruzzo. The Authority office is set in the ducal palace in Pettorano sul Gizio, in whose municipal territory the reserve extends. It is a connection area between the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise and the Majella NP, as well as between the nature reserves of the Lake of San Domenico and Gole del Sagittario (Gorges of Sagittario).

The species for maximum protection is the gentiana plant, once widespread, today in strong rarefaction especially for the indiscriminate collection of which was subject because of its beneficial properties. It is assumed that the Marsican brown bear is a permanent presence in the reserve, but it is more likely its assiduous study of the area. Live there other protected species: wolves, wild cats, deer and roe deer.
