Brilliant and genius engineer, Corradino D’Ascanio was born in Popoli on 1 February 1891. For years he devoted himself to the design and construction of the helicopter, a project carried out in 1928 after many vicissitudes. The positive result of this project, however, was not immediately appreciated.
But the creation of the Vespa, another brilliant idea of D’Ascanio, commissioned by the Piaggio, revolutionized the concept of a moped, being an archetype of the current scooters, and is still a brand of global success.
Corradino D’Ascanio worked for the Agusta helicopter company. He taught at the Normale di Pisa, and died in Pisa in August 1981.
