Church of Santa Maria a Mare, Giulianova

The medieval church of Santa Maria a Mare is located in Giulianova, midway between the lido and the old town. Erected in X century, it shows a stone portal with rich decorations. A sculpture of a Madonna and child stands out among animals of different symbolical meanings. In contrast to these holy and innocent symbols, there are some obscene and mocking figures, making gestures to ward off bad luck. Such contradictions prove the once stone masons’ power and freedom of expression.
