Abbey of St. Maria di Propezzano, Morro d’Oro

The Romanesque Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Propezzano is located in the valley of Vomano, in the municipality of Morro d’Oro. Founded in 715 as a tribute to the miracle of the apparition of the Virgin on May 10 (each May 10 the Holy Door is opened), the abbey was renovated in the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, while the bell tower was erected in the fifteenth century. The interior is decorated by valuable frescoes. The cloister is private.

Today the monastery, in the writer’s opinion, is not valued enough.
