The Lake of Bomba is a man-made lake, made in 1962 from the barrage of the river Sangro by a dirt dike (the first in Europe) to produce electricity. It is about 7 km long, 1,5 km wide and about 57,50 m deep. It is a remarkable water basin to fight against the forest fires. It is about 2 km far from Bomba, in the Province of Chieti.
Its clear waters are the perfect habitat of many ichthyc species (trout, catfish, carp, chub, goldfish, perch, etc.). Thanks to “Isola Verde” (Green Island) Tourist Resort (www.isolaverdeonline.it), made up of a big restaurant, a hostel and camper parkings, the lake has become a renowned tourist destination, where the rowing regattas of the Pescara 2009 Mediterranean Games were disputed and it is possible to practise water games.
The lake of Bomba can be also reached by Sangritana railway (www.sangritana.it) and its “Treno della Valle” (the Train of the Valley). Sangritana organizes tourist routes along the valley of the Sangro river.
