Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio

The hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio is in the territory of Roccamorice (A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, exit at “Caramanico” tollbooth), Pescara, in Majella National Park, heading for Santo Spirito (Holy Ghost) hermitage. To get to the hermitage it is necessary to pay extremely attention to the signposts. A path leads to the hermitage in 20 minutes’ walk through thickets and fields in Majella uplands. A rocky tunnel announces the hermitage that dominates the Valley of Saint Bartolomeo.

Rebuilt in XIII century by Pietro da Morrone, then appointed pope with the name of Celestino V, the little building is set in the rock 600 m above sea level, in a wonderful natural scenario. Many pilgrims go there on 25th August. A trail to the Orfento Valley starts from the canyon, below the hermitage.
