Capestrano

Capestrano (about 1000 inhabitants) is in the Province of L’Aquila. It is 43 km far from L’Aquila. It rises on a hilltop that dominates the high valley of the Tirino river, near Navelli. In fact, it is part of the Mountain Community Campo Imperatore-Piana di Navelli. It is also part of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains.

The medieval village is renowned for its beautiful Piccolomini Castle, St. John of Capistrano or San Giovanni da Capestrano (Capestrano, 1386 – Ilok, 1536) and the Italic statue of the Warrior of Capestrano, today kept in Chieti Archaeological Museum.

Capestrano boasts an excellent production of saffron, almond, grapes and olive oil. Sheep and trout farming is spread. In the second week of August the fair of trout is held in Capestrano.
